If you’ve ever tried to search for anything on the Internet, you’ve probably used a search engine like Google. Google scans websites and takes into account all of the information in the site including text on the pages and names of the pages and stores it. When a search is performed, Google pulls information that matches the query and displays the results. It lists the results; the sites it deems most relevant are listed first. When optimizing a website, the goal is to get it as high on the list as possible for your targeted keywords. In the process of building a site, it’s a good idea to compile a list of words that you think would be used to search for a company like yours. You can also have someone outside of your business do the same. These words should be compiled into a list that can be incorporated into your site’s copy. You will also need to take into account the amount of sites there may be in your subject. Having a niche is important! The more sites that share the same content, the harder it will be to get to the top of the list. Someone searching for sites about a general subject are going to have far more results than something much more specific. Optimizing a website does not happen overnight. Results may take months to show because search engines scan sites periodically. Making changes to your website often will help your site be more relevant in the search engines. Search engines like Google will scan your site more often if they see you are constantly updating. |
